The Golden Apple Tree Clinic | Poster/Ad designs

Spine Check poster design, to be put up around different locations, that the clinic shall be offering free spine checks at. Trying to make it as clean and clinical as possible, but not too clinical it still needs to be friendly (ish).
Advert designed for local directories. Just smaller than a6. Making it as simple and clean  as possible.
Green is obviously the same colour as the logo- linking the whole ad together.
Same typefaces used throughout all advertisements and business and appointment cards.
I also throughout this process have learnt that I have a love of alignment.

The Golden Apple Tree Clinic | Business & Appointment Card

Screen shot of working in Illustrator to create the back & front of the business cards.
Had a difficulty with this as there are 2 address to be put on the business card.
Cannot wait to see this printed in spot UV varnish. It will make me very happy to see the final product.
With this being a specialist effect on the card, there is now no need for a limited edition series made in letterpress, which is a shame- but practical. So maybe in the future once he has a set basis of clients.
Appointment cards have also been designed- this is them in their illustrator form, i cannot wait to see how they are to be printed. I am really happy how well the front and back connect with one another. It was a simple idea- but looks and works really well i think. Blue lines won't appear on print, they are just me playing around with the guideline- to make everything beautifully aligned.
Changed the typeface to gill sans on the business card, as feel it is easier on the eye to read then Futura. Plus I don't really want the bulk of text to be in the same typeface as the logo.
- also attention to detail- check out the @ signs on the e-mail, changed font sizing so that the sizing is in align with the rest of the text, otherwise it looks funny and the wrong sizing in comparison to the rest of it.

Vector Buildings

*Happy Accident*
Whilst creating the golden apple tree logo (in futura) I started to create this building using the lowercase l. Because the letter is created in outlines, the striking blue vectors really stand out. The only way to properly capture this is to do a snapshot of it. Which I like because it won't ever be permanent. I feel like there is a whole world of vector based letter form buildings to discover (in my spare time) possible making my way through either the whole typeface, Futura, or using the letter l in various typefaces.

The Golden Apple Tree Clinic | Logo Development

So after spending the day having a group tutorial and working on the logo designs further, these are what have been designed today. The slightly burnt orange edges of the apple seem to be liked the most, making the logo feel warmer and more friendly for clients. The Business cards have to be ready by tomorrow evening, so lots still to work on, but it'll definitely get done, am on a roll now. May need to make adjustments to the type sizing of The Golden Apple Tree so that that is easier to read. Got the feeling that the ones that have been most successful so far are the ones where the apple is not fully present, but from colour and shape it is still easily recognisable as an apple.

The Golden Apple Tree Clinic | Initial Designs

Explanations for what has been done so far.
After spending the day with Jonny talking over the logo designs, he really liked the idea of this simple one golden apple. Tad worried may remind me of mac. But he wanted something simple and bold, and i said a logo should be simple so its memorable. So he likes this design so far. There shall be a tree incorporated into this. And should work well as animation for the website design. Also we've agreed that a number of limited edition cards shall be produced which should work beautifully in either letterpress or screen printed medium. Something involving hand crafted materials, especially as this is for a chiropractor that is working with hands and takes patience and a massive element of care like these printing techniques. And I had the idea of laser cutting the bark of the tree that will be incorporated into this. STUNNING hopefully is how these three process will work together.
I decided on a sans serif typeface as most clinical/ medical companies work on the basis of sans serif, verdana for example. But i'd like a twist so need to work on the spacing and sizing of these typefaces.
The clinic is called the golden apple tree clinic, because the golden apple represents eternal health & love. There is a possibility of adding features to the apple for paediatrics as this is where Jonny shall be going in his chiropractic future. Figured a few tweaks to the original logo, would make that quite simple and beautiful. I think I am going to work with the bottom typeface but add edit the vectors so that it either incorporated the spine or apple figure to it, subtle- nothing in your face, just a few beautiful well thought out features, when you start looking at the typography.

10 x 10 x 10

Project basically writing down your general thinking for your dissertation.
Obviously I had to do a quick design for this as had an idea in my head and wanted to get it out there visually on paper to see how it looked.

So this is an information graphics poster on my thinking towards my dissertation- a morning well spent I think, I like the colours- I need to integrate colour more into my work!
The line you are meant to follow should represent the journey I went on for my dissertation, going around in circles with a one track mind at the start but then my ideas came to fruition and grew- looking at different aspects and arguments. The three boxes are bibliography entries (red), general thoughts and ideas on where to go (green) and the question I decided upon (blue)

Product Design | Head to Toe

Head to Toe products in a box.
So final deadline for Unit 10 is looming now and am putting everything together so that it is presentable, thinking of it as if it were to be presented to a design agency/ company, which is really helping me put this all together. I've designed holders for all the necklaces so they don't get tangled, and also look part of a set. Alongside these are the T-shirts that I designed, all of these products are to be presented in a kraft box with black lining. I love how vibrant the colours are looking especially as most my work, as I have discovered recently, is in black and white.

Stockwell | Development

Stockwell's Development:
Just a few of the illustrator versions of Stockwell that were then hand rendered as part of the process for Stockwell. Developed from the beautiful typeface Rockwell (monotype industry). By starting off with Rockwell, I removed the major slabs which I felt were too dominating, changed the inner circles to a sharper angle and then started editing these by hand, gradually these started to make the typeface Stockwell. Going over every single nook & cranny of each letter, number and punctuation mark, the typeface started to come together.

Reverting to Type & New North Press

 Reverting to Type Exhibition
A typography exhibition held at New North Press, ground floor (Near Old Street Tube Station) dedicated to modern practitioners of typography in letterpress.
An amazing and inspiring exhibition all about typography with a mixture of work varying from different backgrounds, well known and up and coming practitioners... some who I see daily! Walking around this exhibition I felt inspired to start working in letterpress no longer  just digital typography, there is so much more texture and soul to these pieces of work and a skill of typesetting.
The placement of these letters I would never have even thought about- maybe i'm just narrow minded and can only see type in one way- but I think working with the type physically really gets you thinking about the layout differently, rather than on a static screen.
  review about this exhibition
 New North Press
After looking around the gallery space and getting a real hunger for letter pressing, David my tutor (who exhibited) knew the owner of New North Press, who then gave us a tour of his studio upstairs. Obviously typographic instinct and curiosity kicked in immediately with being overwhelmed with the amount of type available there. I started asking Graham lots of questions, he saw himself more of a typesetter than typographer, a typographer being someone who designed type not just the layout. His favourite type face would have to be Caslon, which I can understand as is a beautiful piece of design as a book face- currently being used in some of my own book designs.

The beauty about letterpress is when you enter at first it's overwhelming- what with being faced by draws and draws of typefaces ranging from 6pt to who knows what pt, the amount of organisation of it is amazing, a form of cataloguing, a system and a place for everything. Organised chaos at its best.
New North Press

The interesting thing about New North Press is its vast collection of typefaces- especially at this point in time in history- when a lot of blocks have been thrown away- what with letterpress dying out, with much faster methods of printing type available. It would be difficult to build up a collection of type like that which you see at New North Press, it took them 13 long years to get a basic range of typefaces, which has now grown.
I took great pleasure in seeing the collection, and going for a drink with designers and typographers after as well.

Stockwell | book form

Stockwell alphabet.
Made a book of Stockwell in its digital and printed forms!!
Again- many adjustments need to be made- but the difference between digital and printed is amazing.
I love printed work it feels like it has more character.

Flocking type

Flocking type is a project I'm working on at the moment.
About the connotations behind typography.
You look at a typeface and make assumptions, for example the top typeface, Rosewood Std, may be associated with the circus or a wild west salon. By using the same 2 words, coming soon, I wanted to see what people may think is coming soon. I flocked them all to keep them in the same medium, so purely focusing on type. The original reason for this was, one day i was watching itv 3/2 (i think?) and I can't stand their advertising for upcoming programmes. I was wondering through the right use of typography could you suggest to the audience what might be a programme coming soon to itv, purely through this medium. Simple and effective! I gave people a questionnaire to answer as to what each typeface makes them believe will be coming soon. Am busy tidying this into a catalogue.

tredici process | typeSCALE

Above: A few of the experiments for making this typeface.
So Why make tredici?
I had a workshop with Marcus leis Allion  great tutor (he is also my dissertation tutor).
who basically i have to thank for making me look at type design in a completely new way.
So many typefaces now are just done easily taken from previous inspirations, but Marcus taught me that try and not be defined by the conventions of that space. So this was how tredici was spawned. trying to mesh a cursive typeface onto a strict 13 dot matrix grid.
I have still only designed the lowercase of this typeface.
But had so much fun doing this. I've always wanted to make a cursive typeface so why not give myself a bit more of a challenge and place it into a grid that wouldn't naturally fit it.
I like to hand draw then take it to a computer, so can be used in a different format, and then back to a print format. You can see it taking on different meanings with different medias.

Project 101| intitial book design

Okay so this book is called 101.
It's 101 ideas as tokens.
It shows a little bit of my personality and the way in which i work.
Constantly generating ideas- i have put just a few of that selection into a book.
Each page is perforated- so you tear it off and you have an idea for a project.
There are 101 ideas within 5 categories. (Typography needs a lot of work.)
But it is a start and i think it's quite beautiful and fun.
The next idea is to make a permanent book, so the ideas are always stored in there. Only there are duplicates to rip out- so you can work your way through ideas or in general if you need inspiration.
I've already chosen the paper- 40gsm offenbach bible paper and 70gsm Redeem (Natural off white- with shive). Beautiful paper.

Jewellery| packaging

Jewellery designs have gone a stage further. For this to be more of a product I figured the next step was to design a form of packaging. So I designed a skinply holder- with my logo and the name of this jewellery series on the front. There is a black outline where the burn is from the laser around the outside. Unfortuantely cannot see that in this photo though-
i'll varnish them so they will stay permanently.

Dissertation| draft

So recently my life has been consumed with writing my dissertation.
The title of which is:
Are our communication technologies writing us?
and to be honest i have struggled, though it has been interesting, and am still currently writing it. But I realised whilst writing it that writing it in the order it was to be finally read, didn't suit my style.
So I have written many separate paragraphs. Which I have now printed out and put into 5 sections.
And pieced together to make in the style of a murder note across my bedroom floor.
There are different colours on some sections as they need to be edited- red need quotes- green/ yellow mean maybe should be a separate section -cardboard just says what need to actually go in that section, maybe a paragraph missing. Obviously need to go over the bottom 3 sections properly. Then I'll have to put it together on the computer- and keep editing. I wasted a lot of my day cutting out things.

Tea shirt

Just a little bit of experimenting- seeing whether it may be more appropriate to order a cup of tea using the t-shirt design or the necklace.I prefer the quality of the necklace, its more subtle. And people are more likely to read the tea shirt than the necklace due tot he size of the type.

Pouches| Speakers corner

Designs to be given to people who go to speakers
corner- designed to make people who have a say,
but do not wish to speak, get a say.

In the pouch, which shall be given to people,
are a red and a green card which are meant to
be held up (saying whether one agrees or disagrees with
the speaker) during their talk.

I have designed a simple pouch that can be photocopied
quickly and cheaply, which give instructions on what to do.

Drying document section of Slash forward exhibition.
Something quite beautiful about the differences in them all.
